Why Do the Same Volunteers Keep Burning Out?

Why do the same volunteers keep burning out while new ones never stick? Hint: it's not a commitment problem. It's a design problem.

Most ministries respond to a staffing gap by recruiting harder. Announce it from the pulpit, post it in the bulletin, ask again next month. That's not a fix. It's a bandage on the same wound.

The real issue is usually the role itself was never actually designed. No clear scope. No defined time commitment. No path out when someone needs a break.

Define the role before you recruit for it. Build a real onboarding step, not just a handshake and a Sunday morning. Create a rotation so no single person becomes irreplaceable. Ask departing volunteers why they left, not just who will replace them.

Clear roles reduce burnout before it starts. Rotation protects your ministry from one person's exit. Volunteers who feel designed for, not just used, come back.

You can't recruit your way out of a design problem.
